Davenports – Afternoon Tea

I went for a very special afternoon tea the other week with my dear friend Stella. We hadn’t seen each other for a very long time so we decided our catch-up was something worth celebrating. We headed off to Cheshire to Davenports Tea Room, which was about 40 mins south of Manchester.

We arrived to be greeted by a very furry friend, Davenports is a restaurant and a farm shop so there were a few furry beasts roaming about!

After bidding them a fond afternoon we headed indoors, into the tea rooms – Davenports as an Alice in Wonderland sort of theme going on as it’s located very near to Lewis Carroll’s birthplace, but more on that later – on with the tea! We both plumped for the luxury afternoon tea and it was NOT a disappointment!

An extremely helpful and friendly waitress bought over a beautiful selection of local produce. From savoury locally sourced sandwiches (salad from their garden, eggs from their hens) to some of the most delicious cakes I’ve ever eaten! Cupcakes, meringues, cheesecakes, mini key lime pies, marshmallow and tea loaf! Needless to say we were both stuffed!

So went for a stroll in their on-site garden centre and sniffed a few posies to work off those cakes!

We then headed off to Daresbury to visit Lewis Carroll Centre, it’s on the side of a beautiful church where Lewis Carroll’s father served as the vicar for 11 years. It had an amazing stain glass window which is dedicated to Lewis Carroll, can you recognise some of the characters in the close-ups?

We finished off the day by taking a short drive to where Lewis Carroll’s house used to be. It’s now a very sweet heritage site where you can have picnics, wander around the garden and follow the white rabbit! I’d thoroughly recommend Davenport’s Tea Room for a special occasion – just make sure you book in advance!
